Duhawks finish tourney 3-1, off to 6-1 start

The Loras College volleyball team nearly swept through their second straight tournament and Iowa Conference foe in the championship match in doing so. For the second consecutive weekend the Duhawks squared off with a familiar league opponent in a tournament championship game outside the state of Iowa.

Last week, the Duhawks took the Monmouth invite, losing just one set en route to their 3-0 start. This time around, Loras knocked off both the University of Chicago and Marian 3-0 to begin their weekend. Host St. Mary's took one set from the Duhawks on Saturday morning, but the Duhawks still advanced to the title game with a 3-1 win over the Cardinals. Luther College was the crossover group winner and opponent in the final on Saturday afternoon.

The Norse and Duhawks played a five-set thriller in Gostomski Fieldhouse's final match of the Sugar Loaf Tournament. Loras won sets one and four, forced a 26-24 extra point match in set three, and dropped the final set 15-12 to take their first loss of 2008.

Loras starters Jenny Dziubla (Sr., setter)and Kate Russell (So., OH) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Dziubla also earned tourney MVP honors for her consistency and accuracy from her setter position.

Loras returns to action this Wednesday. The Duhawks will host Luther College in their IIAC, home, and Athletic and Wellness Center opener at 7:00 PM in Dubuque.
