Loras loses five-set thriller to Concordia-Moorhead
32-win season halted in NCAA 1st Round

The Loras College Duhawks volleyball team qualified for the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championships for the first time in 2008 and had their season abruptly ended during the first round of the tournament on Thursday night. Concordia-Moorhead took a five-set heartbreaker from the Duhawks in St. Paul, Minnesota, 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22, 15-11).

Loras won sets one and three by six and four points to earn 1-0 and 2-1 leads in the match. Down the stretch the Cobbers proved to have enough to push past the Duhawks, winning sets four and five to claim a second round matchup.

Statistically, Kate Russell (#29, pictured) shined again, posting her third straight 20-kill performance. Danielle Lewis followed with one of her best matches of the year, putting down 13 kills and hitting .310 for the night. Betsy Neverman had 10 kills to round out the double-digit attacks for Loras. Seniors Betsy Neverman, Jenny Dziubla, and Maggie Huguelet close their careers in the loss after leading the team through one of the biggest turnarounds of a program in Loras history. The Duhawks more than doubled their win total from a year ago, going from 15 to 32 wins. The trio combined for 20 of the team's 62 kills in their final match.

Loras went 6-0 in their first season in the Athletic and Wellness Center (including 2-0 in the IIAC Tournament). They were 10-0 on the road as well, and went 16-5 in neutral site matches. Four players were named to the All-Iowa Conference teams, Jenny Dziubla was the league's MVP, and head coach Teresa Kehe was the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year.
