The Loras College volleyball team defeated the visiting Luther College Norse in the Athletic & Wellness Center for their first home win of 2008- and first in the facility- in their very first attempt. The Duhawks knocked off the Norse by a score of 3-1. Luther won the first set in a tightly contested 25-23 thrilling opener. Loras rattled off wins in the next three sets, setting the tone for the remainder of the match with a 24-15 win in set number two. Four-point and three-point sets followed in three and four, and the Duhawks woke up Thursday atop the Iowa Conference standings. Wednesday's win over Luther helped put Saturday's loss to the same squad in the title game of the Sugar Loaf Classic further back in the rear view mirror.
Newcomer Kate Russell led the Duhawks in kills with 17. Through the first eight games of 2008, Russell has led the squad in that category every time, tying teammate Julianne Lord once for the honor. Setter Jenny Dziubla once again distributed the ball well, tallying 34 assists on the night. Loras also outblocked another opponent, something they've done in every win this year and were unable to do in the loss to Luther over the weekend. Betsy Neverman assisted on five of the team's 11 blocks on the night.
Loras is off to their best start under third year head coach Teresa Kehe at 7-1 and best program start since 2003. The team will return to action on Saturday, September 20th, when they travel to Chicago to play in the North Park University Quad Tournament. The next home match in the AWC is Tuesday, September 30th, versus Cornell College.
