Loras sweeps Spartans, up to 6-0 in IIAC

The Loras College volleyball team won in straight sets on Wednesday night over the visiting University of Dubuque 25-14, 25-18, and 25-17 for their sixth win in the league and 22nd overall.
Kate Russell led the Duhawks with 13 kills and was followed by Danielle Lewis who posted nine for the night. After that, the Duhawks saw a very balanced attack on offense, getting five kills each from Julianne Lord, Betsy Neverman, Jenny Dziubla, and Maggie Hugulet. Dziubla added 42 assists to up her school-record total to 3,682.
The Duhawks also posted eight blocks and four aces in the regular season finale at the new Athletic and Wellness Center. Loras went 4-0 during the regular season on their home floor - each win was over an IIAC opponent.
Loras also honored and congratulated the four seniors who are members of the team in 2008. Jenny Dziubla, Leah Holle, Maggie Hugulet, and Betsy Neverman were each recognized prior to the match. They accounted for 15 kills and four blocks on the night.
In addition to the senior night festivities, Loras also hosted their "Think Pink" events on Wednesday in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and women's health. The concourse of the AWC was filled with tables of health professionals who offered insight and information about women's health. Other events included a 50/50 raffle and over 40 door prizes that were raffled off over the course of the match. The Duhawks also wore pink jerseys on Wednesday. Proceeds from tonight will go to the Maria House, a women's shelter in Dubuque as well as the Breast of Friends organization.
Loras's final two Iowa Conference matches are on the road against Central (October 28th) and Simpson (November 4th). The Duhawks are now back to even with the Storm at 6-0 in the league after tonight's match. Central is in third place with a 4-1 record with Loras, Cornell, and Buena Vista remaining on their schedule. Simpson also plays Dubuque. Loras has already locked up a spot in the Iowa Conference Tournament on November 7th and 8th. The regular season champion will host the tournament.
