Thys, Calvert, DMR claim All-American honors Jon Denham, Sports Information Director March 14, 2008
The Duhawk throwers were on display for the NCAA III world to see on Friday in Ada, Ohio to open the 2008 NCAA III Championships. The women's weight throw kicked off the meet, and Ellen Thys led the way for Loras. In her final attempt, the senior scored five team points and jumped into fourth place, earning All-American status with the 55'-1.5" toss. This was Ellen's fifth All-American performance overall and first in the indoor season. Sophomore Liz Ulferts finished 9th at 53'-7.75". A year ago, Liz was eighth at 52'-6.75". She completes the season with the longest throw in the country this year (58'-1.25" @ IIAC meet).
~On the men's side, Nick McWilliams also finished ninth in the weight throw. His best toss was his second at 56'-6".
~Although the top three pole vaulters each claimed the same top height, the tie breaker pushed Kyle Calvert to third place on Friday. He and two other competitors went 16'-9.5". Kyle has improved his mark in three consecutive years at nationals, finishing third in back-to-back years after first claiming an 8th place spot in 2006.
~The distance medley relay team of Cody Dreyer, Nate Gee, Ray Orris, and Ben Grant ran an All-American time of 10:07.40, good for sixth place overall.
~In the mile run, both Tara Kilburg and Ben Grant advanced to Saturday's finals.
~ The men's team is in 5th place and the women's team 15th after one day of action. Competition resumes at 10:00 AM eastern time at Ohio Northern University. |
