Earleywine claims K's records April 8, 2008 Jon Denham, Sports Information Director

Sophomore starting pitcher Kate Earleywine has had an immediate impact on the Loras College softball team since arriving on campus as a freshmen for the 2006-2007 year. During the 2007 season she tied a single game mark for strikouts at 12 and struckout over 200 hitters in just 198.2 innings.
Saturday against Buena Vista, the righty stamped an even larger spot in the Loras College record books. Kate threw 19 scoreless innings en route to a doubleheader sweep of the Beavers in Storm Lake. The Duhawks won Game 1 in 12 innings on a Kim Chalekian homerun and won Game 2, 4-0, also via the long ball. Earleywine gave up just eight hits in the two games and struck out 15 opponents in the first game to claim the sole spot for a single game effort over Laura Simenson. Also in the first game, she surpassed the career K's mark of 279. After Saturday was over, the Brodhead, Wisconsin native has set down 293 hitters on her own.
The eight year old career strikout record was previously held by Simenson as well. Kate claims the spot after 51 appearances in 56 team games and 40 starts over her first two season with the team. She has 23 wins so far.
The Duhawks are schedule to play six home games this week, the first of which will be their home opener for 2008. |
