Duhawks win 08 opener over Clarke
Jon Denham, Sports Information Director
It wasn't always pretty, but the Loras College women's soccer team opened the 2008 season with a win over Clarke College Friday evening by the score of 2-0.
A scoreless opening 45 minutes had the Crusaders thinking spoiler, despite being outshot 11-3 in the first half. Kate Young and Dolly Duffy failed to convert on one touch opportunities in the first half in front of Katie Schmidt and the Clarke goal.
The second half saw things open up for the Duhawks, who continued to their attack with a number of passes towards the end line. The games opening goal came off the head of a Clarke defender. Allison Thompson's free kick was misdirected and left Schmidt off her line in the 49th minute.
Alex Clesen challenged Schmidt twice to make saves in the second half before eventually tucking the games second goal away in the 84th. Torey Murray made three saves in earning the shutout for the Loras.
The team will play at home again on September 4th when they host Grinnell College at 7:00 PM in the Rock Bowl. That game can be seen live via the Loras College website.
