The Loras College women's basketball team is off to the best start in school history with their seventh win to start the 2007-2008 season following a 79-74 win over the University of Dubuque Wednesday night.
The Duhawks scored a season high 79 points and held off the host Spartans late charge to up their record to 7-0. Natalie Pucci led the way with 28 points and added four assists and three rebounds for Loras.
Lindsay Bava and Nicole Swanson each drained two three-pointers to add to their double-digit scoring nights. Bava scored 15 points and Swanson 10. Mindy Meyer led the way on the glass with seven boards.
The Duhawks held off a fiesty Spartans team led by Courtney Musser, who scored a team high 22 points in the loss.
A double-digit second half lead was down to as many as two points at 60-58 before the Duhawks extended the lead once more, led by Sarah Wilson who score nine points and knocked down a clutch three-point basket late in the game. The other big basket came from Natalie Pucci, who hit a 14 foot jumper from the left wing on a Wilson assist to keep the Spartans at a distance down the stretch.
Loras will travel to Beloit, Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference game. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM. The Duhawks will then have ten days before their next game, as they prep for finals week and begin the semester break. |
