Duhawks rally, up record to 10-0 Jon Denham, Sports Information Director December 29, 2007
The Loras College women's basketball team upped their record to a perfect 10-0 on Saturday afternoon with a 73-62 win over Augustana College. The tenth win continues to the record streak to start a season and also is the longest winning streak in the program's history.
After trailing at the half for the first time this season (35-27), the Duhawks shot 51% in the second half and went 5-8 from behind the three point line, eventually eclipsing the Vikings with 5:28 remaining in the game. Lisa Morrissey drained a three to make it 64-61. Augustana scored just one point in the final 6+ minutes, mostly due to the increased defensive pressure applied by the Duhawks.
Alicia Miller, who started her first game of the season, scored six points, hauled in a team high eleven rebounds, and sparked the defense down the stretch with a number of blocks and key rebounds. She added two steals to her stat line as well.
Natalie Pucci played just four minutes of the first half after early foul trouble, but blew up in the second half for 14 of her team high 18 points. Lindsay Bava added 14 points and four rebounds. Lisa Morrissey dished out six assists and also added five steals.
Each team turned the ball over 21 times. Loras blocked a total of nine shots, compared to just two by Augustana.
The Duhawks will return to action in 2008 when they travel to Waverly to take on Wartburg College in their third IIAC game of the season on January 5th. Loras ends the 2007 calendar year with a record of 23-3. |
