Duhawks win 6 events at '08 Indoor Meet Jon Denham, Sports Information Director March 2, 2008
The Loras College men’s and women’s track and field teams traveled to Decorah, Iowa this weekend to compete in the IIAC Indoor Championships at Luther College. The men’s team finished with a strong second place result, while the women checked in with a fifth place finish.
MEN – 2nd
The Duhawks won five events over the weekend, including two by Ben Grant. The senior won both the mile and the 3000 M runs. Ben won the mile by just over one second and the 3000 by just under three seconds. Other wins for the men came in the 4 X 800 M Relay, the high jump, and the pole vault. The closest victory for the men came in the 4 X 800 relay, when the Duhawks beat Central at the line. Chris Buresh won the high jump and provisionally qualified at a height of 6’7”. Buresh also finished second in the pole vault (13’ 11 1/4“) behind teammate Kyle Calvert who went up a league best 15’ 11”. The distance medley team also finished second. Ray Orris was also third in the 800 M.
WOMEN – 5th
The win for the women over the weekend came from sophomore Liz Ulferts, who was best in the weight throw at 58’ 1 ¼” – nearly two feet further than second place. Loras also claimed third in the event with senior Ellen Thys. Other individual top fives for the women included freshman Laura Rieger in the 400 M (4th), freshman Tara Kilburg in the mile (4th), Barb Kremer in the 55 M Hurdles (4th). Top relay teams for the women were the 4 X 400 relay team (3rd), 4 X 800 relay (2nd), and the Distance Medley (3rd by .02 seconds).
The Duhawks will now prep for the NCAA Indoor Meet being held in Ada, Ohio March 14-15.
