A former Loras soccer standout, Dan Rothert has been at the helm of the Duhawk men’s and women’s soccer programs since 1998. In ten seasons, Rothert has turned both programs into perennial Iowa Conference title contenders and regional powers.

In 2007, Rothert guided the men’s team to the Iowa Conference title, the NCAA III Final Four, and a near-perfect 23-0-2 record (including an unblemished 8-0 record in the Iowa Conference). The women’s team once again won the Iowa Conference title, amassing an 8-0 record and outscoring their opponents 25-5 in league games, and finishing with an overall record of 14-7.

Rothert has been named Iowa Conference “Coach of the Year” seven times in his ten year career. He was named men’s “Coach of the Year" for the third straight year in 2007 after leading the men to their best season in program history and was named women’s “Coach of the Year” in 2004, 2003, 2001 and 1998. Rothert has amassed an impressive career record of 286-122-21 record while at Loras. In ten years Rothert’s teams have set records for winning percentage nearly every season he has coached the Duhawks. His teams have won or shared eight Iowa Conference Championships (Men in 2003, 2006, and 2007, Women in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007 ) and eight Iowa Conference Tournament titles. 

During his tenure, Rothert has coached four Iowa Conference MVP’s, 57 first team All-IIAC conference performers, 36 second team, 18 All-Region performers and three of the Iowa Conference’s All-Americans. Furthermore, the Duhawks are consistently recognized for their academic achievement. Rothert’s teams consistently carry a GPA above 3.0. He has coached numerous academic all-conference players, sixteen academic all-region and two academic All-Americans.

Rothert holds the three highest soccer coaching licenses attainable. He has obtained a USSF “A” License, a NSCAA Premier Diploma and the NSCAA Goalkeeper National Diploma. He has worked numerous camps and worked as a clinician for a variety of youth soccer groups in Iowa and Illinois.

Prior to becoming the head coach at Loras. Rothert was the assistant women’s soccer and assistant women’s basketball coach at Plattsburgh State (NY) where the soccer team was the 1996 New York State Conference champion. Rothert served as the assistant coach at Loras in the 1997 season and was the head boy’s soccer coach at Dubuque Senior High School from 1997-2000, earning “Coach of the Year” honors in 1997.

Rothert has both his undergraduate (’96) and master’s (’99) degrees from Loras in Physical Education. He and his wife Karen, a Loras graduate and former volleyball student-athlete for the Duhawks, reside in Dubuque with their two sons, Danny and Jack.

ASSISTANT COACH ZACH ALUMBAUGH

Zach brings his soccer coaching experience back to his alma mater beginning in the fall of 2008. He graduated from Loras College in 2002 with his degree in Sports Management. Since 2004, Zach has been a coach and Director of External Affairs with the Springfield Sports Club in Springfield, Missouri. Zach was a goalkeeper for the Duhawks for the 1998-2001 seasons. He holds the team's career records for shutouts and saves. His career GAA was 1.31, good for fourth all-time. Zach, a native of Mahomet, Illinois, will work as the top assistant for the men's team and with the goalkeepers for both squads.

ASSISTANT COACH WILL SPENCER

2006 was the first season at Loras for Will. He served as the Head Coach of the reserve program. Prior to coming to Loras, Spencer was the goalkeeper coach at Clarke.

His other coaching experience includes a stint as the head men's and women's coach at Wartbrug College during the 1990's. Will has also coached club and high school soccer, coaching at Cedar Falls High School, Kennedy High, and Saint Petersburg High School where his team was ranked second in the state of Florida.  He is also currently the head coach of the Wahlert girl's program.

Will has an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA and a master's degree in education. He played collegiately as a goalkeeper at Coe and currently resides in Dubuque with his wife, Ellen, and his sons, Alex and Luc.
