STEVE OSTERBERGER -- HEAD COACH OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, QB'S COACH

A native of Dubuque, Steve Osterberger begins his second season at Loras in 2007 after serving as the head coach at Buena Vista University from 2000-2005, posting winning seasons in five of the years. He was named the 2004 Iowa Conference Coach of the Year after finishing 6-4. Osterberger will also serves as the defensive coordinator.
Osterberger left Buena Vista as the third winningest coach in school history. He spent 10 years in Storm Lake beginning in 1996 when he was named as the offensive coordinator. Counting his time as an assistant, Osterberger’s Buena Vista teams went 7-3 against Loras including this season’s 14-0 win in Storm Lake.
“I am extremely excited to join the staff at Loras College,” Osterberger said. “It is a great opportunity at a great institution and the chance to go back to Dubuque has always intrigued me. I think it is one of the best jobs in the conference and Loras has always been very talented. Chris (Klieman) and Bob (Bierie) did a great job and I want to continue what they’ve started.”
In addition to his coaching accomplishments at Buena Vista, Osterberger helped institute several community initiatives. He managed the Rockin’ Reader Program in Storm Lake grade schools, implemented the Adopt-a-Highway, and organized a Halloween Trick-or- Treat night for the football team.
Osterberger graduated from Drake University with a degree in sociology. He spent four years as a starting quarterback for the Bulldogs and set 20 offensive records including net passing yardage with over 7,000 yards. He earned the Jerry Howlett Memorial Award for Outstanding Athlete at Drake University in 1989.
Osterberger has a diverse coaching career that began at his alma mater where he was a student assistant working with quarterbacks and running backs. He also spent two years as a graduate assistant with the Bulldogs coaching the inside linebackers. He also served a stint at Simpson College coaching quarterbacks and wide receivers.

GAVIN McMACKEN DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR/DEFENSIVE LINE

Gavin McMacken is entering his fourth season on the sideline for the Duhawks working with the defensive line. McMacken has worked with several key players including 2005 Gagliardi finalist and two-time all-conference selection Ross Dillavou.
McMacken came to Loras from Alma College in Michigan, where he spent four years as an assistant coach in charge of the defensive line and coordinating the academic support programs for the team. He was a three-year starter for the Scots and helped lead the team to a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. McMacken graduated from Alma in 2000 with a degree in English. He recently finished his master's degree at Loras in athletic administration.
KYLE WESTPHAL DEFENSIVE BACKS/SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR

Kyle Westphal begins his first season as a member of the Duhawks coaching staff in 2007. He will work with the defensive backs for Loras. Westphal graduated from Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa in 2005 with degrees in Business Administration and Sports Administration following a four year career with their team. As a player at Simpson Kyle was named to the All-IIAC squad three times as a defensive back and also earned All-American honors. During his final semester at Simpson he began his transition into the coaching realm when he assisted in assigning workouts and contributing to the recruiting process.
His coaching career continued at Northwest Missouri State University during the 2005 and 2006 seasons while Kyle worked towards his masters degree. He worked as both the Wide Receivers Coach and Running Backs Coach in that time. The team went 25-5 over those two seasons and has competed in the NCAA Division II Playoffs in both campaigns, reaching the title game during both playoff runs. The Bearcats were undefeated (14-0) until their post-season loss to Grand Valley State in 2006. Westphal graduated in 2006 with a science degree in Education (Health and Physical Education) from NMSU.
Kyle now resides in Dubuque with his wife Crystal and their two children, five-year-old daughter Zoey and infant son Kobe.
PAUL HOFFMAN OFFENSIVE LINE

Hoffman begins his third season at Loras in 2007. Hoffman will coach the offensive line again this year after working with all-conference selections Pat Ade and Wes Veach in the recent past.
Hoffman comes to Loras from Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Ill. At Joliet Catholic, Hoffman was a teacher and coached for the 12-time 5A football state champions in two of their most recent title runs. He also served as the head coach of the boys track and field program for one season. Prior to his four years with the Hilltoppers, he served as a teacher and coach at Lincoln-Way East High School, also in the suburbs of Chicago.
He also has experience working at the college level. In 2000, Hoffman coached the tight ends and assisted on the offensive line for Allegheny College.
A 1999 graduate of Carthage College, Hoffman graduated with a degree in history. He earned All-CCIW honors in each of his four seasons, first team as a junior and senior, second team as a sophomore, and honorable mention as a freshman. Hoffman was a center for the Redmen, serving as captain his final two years.
JOE ASHFIELD WIDE RECEIVERS
Joe joins the Duhawks staff for 2008 after a playing a coaching career that has sent him to different corners of the football world. Ashfield's coaching stops include Auckland, New Zealand (North Harbour Pride and New Zealand Haka head coach), Cleveland, Mississippi (Delta State University), Palo Alto, California (Stanford University), and most recently Indianola, Iowa (Simpson College).
His playing career (quarterback) also included time in Germany following an intercollegiate career at both Drake University and NCAA III power St. John's University. His duties have included everything from special teams to game plan implementation on both sides of the ball. He also has experience as a recruiting coordinator in Iowa with Simpson College.
Beginning with Spring practice this semester, Joe will work primarly with the wide receivers.
He lives in Dubuque with his fiance Susan.
PAT MURPHY RUNNING BACKS

Pat Murphy is in his third season of coaching at the collegiate level. A graduate of the University of Northern Iowa, Murphy has coached football for over 30 years in Dubuque, his hometown. Murphy served as the Head Football Coach at Dubuque Senior High School from 1989-2003.
He also teaches at Senior and will enter his 31st season as the Head Girls Track and Field Coach in the spring. Murphy and his wife Christine are the proud parents of three children, Sean (24), Meghan (21), and Molly (17).
RALPH ROLLINS LINEBACKERS

Ralph Rollins is one of two new faces to the Duhawks coaching staff in 2007. He has a long history of coaching in Dubuque that began as a student assistant at the University of Dubuque from 1979-1981. Rollins earned his bachelor's degree from Dubuque in 1982 and started the ball rolling on his professional coaching career.
Rollins had two coaching positions outside of Dubuque before returning full time in 1991. He was Defensive Coordinator at Alburnett High School for eight seasons and Head Coach at LaSalle High School for two more. In 1991 Rollins joined the staff at Wahlert high school where he remained a staple for over 15 years. He worked as both the offensive and defensive coordinator at different times during his tenure and also coached the linemen for six seasons. In 2004 he was named the IHSAA Assistant Coach of the Year for the 4A schools.
Ralph recently completed his MS degree at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and lives in Dubuque with his wife Jane. They are the proud parenst of four children - Stacy (21), Heidi (19), Nick (16), and Anne (12).
BJ MAIN ASST. COACH

A 2005 graduate of Loras, B.J. Main is now in his third season as a memberof the football coaching staff working with the wide receivers.
Main was a quarterback at Loras for four seasons under Bob Bierie and graduated with a degree in criminal justice. He was a member of the 2003 team that won seven games. While a student-athlete at Loras, the Duhawks won over 20 games. B.J. currently resides in Dubuque.
