The Loras College Men's and Women's Cross Country teams began their 2007 season with impressive opening weekend performances at the Elmhurst College Early Bird Invite.
Women-1st Place
The women were led on Friday by captain Mary Bridget Corken who finished in second place, up from her 12th place finish at Elmhurst in 2006. Corken ran the 4K race in 15:00. The Duhawks had their top five runners finish in the top 15 places to earn the best team finish. Hannah Weiss finished in third place overall, fifteen seconds behind Corken to help secure the team win.
Top 5 finishes: Corken (2), Weiss (3), Kilburg (10), Stevens (13), Wilder (14)
Men-2nd place
Senior Ben Grant, who won the IIAC meet in 2006 and earned All-American honors, won the men's race in leading the team to a second place finish. Grant finished in second place in 2006 at Elmhurst and completed the 6K race in 2007 in a time of 19:05. The other notable performace came from a first year runner very familiar with the suburban Chicago terrain. Mark Sulkin, a 2007 graduate of York High School in Elmhurst, finished in seventh place behind Grant.
Top 5 finishes: Grant (1), Sulkin (7), Sabin (14), Oberfoell (21), Schaefer (22).
