The Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues are almost two weeks into their seasons, the World Baseball Classic has started, and now, the 2009 Loras College baseball season is underway. After two scoreless innings, the Duhawks opened the 2009 scoring with three runs in the top of the third on three hits against Gustavus Adolphus College. When Adam Gross singled home Tyler Shireman and Alex Miklo. Gross would later score on an error and that was just about all Loras starter Kevin Moriarty (left) needed.
The sophomore went seven full innings and struck out six in his first win of 2009. Moriarty sprayed seven hits and gave up two unearned runs while walking only one in the Duhawks' first victory.
Second baseman Alex Miklo registered the only multi-hit game. Miklo extended his hitting streak, dating back to 2008, to five games. Also extending a hitting streak from a year ago was Adam Gross, who is up to six consecutive games.
Adam Gross and Alex Miklo (left) added to their streaks with one hit apiece in game two, an extra inning loss to the Gusties. Ben Kuebel had three hits and freshman BJ Juergens added the first two hits of his college career in the loss. Gross also scored two of the runs for Loras.
Loras starter Austin Safranski gave up two runs on four hits in the opening inning of his college career, but settled in and gave up just five hits over the next six innings as the Duhawks mounted a comeback. The purple and gold plated one run in the third, fifth, and sixth inning to claim a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.
In the top of the seventh, Gustavus mounted a three hit attack against Safranski and scored the tying run with two outs to force a tie headed to the bottom of the seventh. The Duhawks went in order and the teams prepared for extra innings.
Two other freshmen took the hill to try and earn the Duhawks a win in the eighth inning, but the Gusties posted four hits and the Duhawks were charged with two errors. Loras was chasing four runs in the bottom half of the eighth but only managed one runner and lost their first game of 2009.
Safranski gave up nine hits and three earned runs in the no-decision. Zach Schwartz took the loss in his first appearance, but only one of the four runs he was charged with in the eighth inning was earned.
