Game 1, Coe-10, Loras-5

BOXSCORE

The Loras College baseball team dropped their first game of a doubleheader on Saturday against number two team in the conference, the Coe College Kohawks, 10-5, at Petrakis Park. The Kohawks got off to an early start, scoring two runs immediately in the first inning. Loras also reached home in the bottom of the first, but was unable to get their bats going again until the fourth. Coe capitalized on the slow starting Duhawk offense, and turned around to complete five more runs in the top of the second. Between the sixth and seventh innings, the Kohawks would score three in order to secure the win.

The Kohawks touched up Matt Barilla early, scoring seven runs through 1.2 innings. Sophomore Kyler Laurie gave a strong showing filling in as relief pitcher to finish out the game. Laurie held Coe to three runs, only one being earned, with three strikeouts.

Lee Boyse started on the mound for the Kohawks. The right-handed senior gave up six hits and five runs, throwing two strikeouts. Taking Boyse’s place for his 6th save of the season, Mike Gaynor added 2.2 innnings.

Center Fielder Cody Smith led the way for Coe going 4-5. Tim Andrews, designated hitter for Loras was the only player to record two hits. Andrews also added one RBI.

Game 2, Loras-2, Coe 1

BOXSCORE

Game two saw Kevin Moriarty take the hill for Loras, and the freshman delivered a complete game win. The righty struck out seven Kohawks en route to his second win of the season and Loras’ lone win in the three game series with Coe.

Coe starter Alex Lewis didn’t disappoint either. He went all six innings for the Kohawks and struck out six. Both starters gave up just five hits on the day.

The game’s first run came in the bottom of the fourth when two Coe errors led to extra bases for Loras. Ryan Schisler and Ryan Baranowski made infield errors in the same frame, allowing Tim Andrews to score and the Duhawks to take the lead without a hit. Loras gave up the tying run in the top of the sixth when Ryan Baranowski made up for the error with an RBI single.

Loras answered with the game-winning run in the bottom half to break the 1-1 tie. With two outs, Don Pirkle and Brock Schneden put together back-to-back hits. Schneded doubled down the left field line and head coach Carl Tebon sent a lumbering Pirkle home. The relay throw missed the cutoff and Pirkle was able to slow himself for the eventual game-winning run.

The Duhawks are now 1-2 in the IIAC and 8-9 overall. Loras returns to action for a doubleheader with Central College on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
