Sociology Program at Loras

Sociology teaches students to view the social world from various sociological perspectives and to develop the ability to pose critical questions about the social world.  The knowledge and skills gained in the program will enable students to be wise consumers of information.  Throughout the program, we encouraged students to be civic-minded and to develop an appreciation for cultural diversity.

    Students will acquire:
    • knowledge of various assumptions about the nature of individuals, society and the relationship between the two
    • an appreciation of multiple perspectives / “views of reality”
    • an awareness of the power of institutions over people

    Skills
    Students who have completed the program will be able to:

    • identify how social structure and culture affect individuals, groups and institutions
    • design and execute a research project for an issue or question
    • apply sociological knowledge and skills to address policy and decision-making
    • communicate clearly in written and oral forms
