AL SCHRAMM AWARD FOR THE OUTSTANDING PHYSICAL EDUCATION MAJOR OF THE YEAR In 1992, the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies initiated the “Outstanding Physical Education Major Award”. The award was named in honor of Al Schramm during the 1998 school year.Al Schramm was a professor at Loras College from 1939-1981. During his tenure, Al not only served as a professor in the department of physical education, but also was chair of the department, intramural director and an athletic coach. Today, the intramural program at Loras is one of the strongest in the United States because of Al Schramm. The criterion considered by the faculty in selecting the recipient of this award exemplifies Al Schramm’s contribution to Loras. The recipient of this award must demonstrate a high level of academic performance, leadership in the field, in community activities, dedication for the development of physical skills, sportsmanship, healthful practices, in addition to moral and emotional growth. The winners of this award are recognized at both the National Association for Sport and Physical Education Annual Convention and the Loras Senior Honors Convocation. The recipient’s name is engraved on a permanent plaque displayed in Graber Sports Center. An individual plaque and a $1,000 scholarship are also awarded to the students receiving the award at an honors luncheon attended by Al Schramm and the faculty of the physical education department at Loras.
