The Loras College Sport Management program offered a January course entitled Sports Business: Infusing Institutional Mission into Daily Operations and the Bottom Line. The class researched the mission statements of several sports agencies of all types, and then investigated whether or not their business practices reflected these statements. Students completed case studies on the World Wrestling Entertainment Company and the Dubuque Thunderbirds hockey team, however the course was highlighted by a trip to St. Louis. Students had the opportunity to visit with representatives of several different sports agencies and ask questions concerning how their business lives out their mission statement.
The businesses we visited included the St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Rams, Gateway International Raceway, Schutt Sports, and others. Students also had the opportunity to learn how non-for-profit sports agencies deliver and carry out their mission statement. The experience was expanded and enhanced by offering an opportunity to perform community service, volunteering in different roles at the Second Annual Dubuque Sports and Recreation Festival.
