Campus Ministry Staff

FrFr. William Joensen, Dean of Campus Spiritual Life

As Dean, I promote the Catholic mission and identity of the College and collaborate with Campus Ministry staff as chaplain providing sacramental and pastoral ministry.  I also teach as a member of the philosophy faculty, and I am the Director of Spiritual Formation for the St. Pius X Seminary Program at Loras.  I was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque in 1989, and I serve as a member of the Medical-Moral Commission of the Archdiocese.  From time to time I contribute to Magnificat publications, and besides my general interest in culture and sports, I am an avid cyclist.  I look forward to seeing you on campus.

Kay Averkamp, Executive Assistant to the Dean of Campus Spiritual Life

Welcome to Loras! I am blessed to have been at Loras for 17 years, working in various areas of the Institutional Advancement Division and most recently, the last 6 years in the President’s Office. I am excited to begin my new role in the Spiritual Life Office, located in room 119 of Keane Hall. I continue to be inspired by the student’s commitment to their faith and look forward to being a part of the Spiritual Life and Campus Ministry team. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Brad for 37 years, and we have three children; a daughter Shawn, and two sons, Ben and Joel.

Stop in anytime to the Spiritual Life Office and introduce yourself. I love meeting new people and yes, the candy basket is always full!

Fr. Scott Boone, Associate Chaplain

It’s good to be back at Loras, my alma mater, having just started my position as Associate Chaplain. Back in the day, I was student body president; and I graduated in ‘97. I studied in Rome for my seminary experience, and was ordained in 2001. I have had several assignments including my last at St. Thomas Aquinas in Webster City. My office on campus is located next to the CEL offices (580 ACC) in the Campus Center, and I would love to have visitors. I am available for Spiritual Direction if you are interested, and I look forward to working as a part of the Campus Ministry team. I can’t wait to see you on campus!

ColleenColleen Kuhl—Director of Campus Ministry

Welcome to Loras! It’s so good to have you here! I have been at Loras College for more than 26 years since I graduated from Loras in 1981. I married my “Duhawk sweetheart,” Jim Kuhl (‘79) and we have four children. After spending most of my Loras time in Student Life and completing graduate work in education and pastoral ministry, I moved into my current role as Director of Campus Ministry. I feel so blessed to work with students on their faith journey—a critical part of your time at Loras—-no matter what your faith tradition. We are all spiritual people and need to nourish our souls-we hope you’ll find many ways of doing that as part of the Loras Community. Please stop by and say hi! It’s always good to hear how you’re doing!

DebbieDebbie Gross—Pastoral Associate

I have been with campus ministry here at Loras for more than 12 years. I love working with college students and helping them grow in their faith whether it be through our RCIA (becoming Catholic) program, retreats, service trips and or spiritual mentoring. I am married to a great guy, Terry (’75) and we have two awesome daughters, Kate and Megan. I look forward to meeting all of our new students and working with all of you!

DaveDavid McDermott—Coordinator of Peace & Justice

Here’s how my life journey has brought me to this point. After graduating in 2001 from Loras, I volunteered with the Jesuit Volunteer Program in Sacramento, CA for one year with underprivileged, inner-city children. Seeking to continue to work for social justice, I joined the Dubuque Catholic Worker community for three years serving women and children, and also spent six month in Pueblo, CO working with homeless and immigrant populations. I have been joyously married to my Loras lass, Stacia, and have a new daughter! Through the generous donation of Paul and Fran Breitbach, Loras was able to reinstate the position of Peace and Justice Coordinator, a position that I feel called to and blessed to be in. I’m looking forward to meeting all the new students as well as creating awareness and dialogue around the Church’s social teachings.

Sr.Sr. Norma Jean —Spiritual Direction

Hi I'm Sr. Norma Jean, I am a Dubuque Franciscan Sister, and I am going to be a Spiritual Director here at Loras College. I have been a teacher, administrator, counselor, and a spiritual director. Before coming to Dubuque, I was a spiritual director at St. Stephen the Witness Catholic Student Center on the University of Northern Iowa Campus. I enjoy a variety of pastimes. Some are listening to music, having coffee with friends, sewing, and playing cards.

DavidDavid Summers —Liturgy Coordinator

Hello Duhawks! As a graduate of the class of 2008, I feel incredibly blessed to be stepping into this new role on campus. I currently hold a Bachelor of Music degree from Loras College, and will start work on a Masters of Ministry degree here this fall. As the Liturgy Coordinator, I will oversee many of the day-to-day happenings involving worship and the places where these going-on occur! These responsibilities include scheduling and training ministers, preparing for Sunday and Wednesday Worship, running music rehearsals, and assisting couples who are preparing for a wedding in one of our chapels. I look forward to getting to know many of you in the years to come and can't wait to watch the Spirit move through you in this chapter of your life! God Bless!

SamSam Kelly —Program Coordinator

My name is Sam Kelly. I joined the Spiritual Life Division in January as the Campus Ministry Program Coordinator. I graduated From Drake University in 2008 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in Philosophy and Religion. At Drake, I was active in Residence Life, Student Government, and the St. Catherine of Sienna Newman Center. After Drake, I worked at Syracuse University for a year and a half in the Office of Residence Life. While I have not been here long, my Duhawk connection is strong because of my brother, Tim Kelly (sophomore). As the Program Coordinator I am involved in most aspects of the Campus Ministry office and try to have all the answers, so come by and ask questions. I am looking forward to meeting and working with students. Come to my window in Campus Ministry anytime.
