ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Loras Judo is a non-profit club which provides a uniform exchange program and graduated discounts after the 2nd family member, thereby keeping it affordable. Safety is stressed in classroom teaching; therefore you assume your own risk in participating.
Judo is organized primarily as a competitive sport. Our members compete regularly in tournaments throughout the Midwest and have twice gone as far as Hawaii for National Championships. However competition is optional. The Club has produced numerous State and National Champions and captured the State Team Title numerous times. It has also produced an alternate for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
Judo was first practiced in 1882 as a safer form of jiu-jitsu. While preserving the traditions and spirit of jiu-jitsu it allowed intense work outs. People of any size can participate fully. Dr. Jigoro Kano, who had been a student of jiu-jitsu, organized judo to the point that it is now; the second most practiced sport in the world. It even obtained status as an Olympic sport in 1964; the first martial art to do so. Judo is different from tae kwon do, aikido, and karate. The principles of judo apply to everyone. Whether you’re young, old, tall, short, big, small, this sport can be enjoyed by anyone who is willing to learn.
