English: Creative Writing
The Creative Writing program is rare for a small undergraduate liberal arts college. Our students benefit from the close personal attention of professors in small (but popular) introductory and advanced workshops in fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction writing. We also offer electives in Playwriting/Screenwriting and Editing. For literary background, students choose from a wide range of literature courses in British, American, European and world literature, and take a rigorous foundational course – Introduction to Literary Studies – and a more advanced course in Literary Criticism. Each senior works one-on-one with a faculty advisor to produce an extended creative thesis in his or her genre of choice.
Literary Society: The Literary Society offers an opportunity to meet other students interested in literature in a social setting. The Literary Society meets to discuss literature and film, to give feedback on student writing, to provide information about internships, and to perform community service.
Literary magazines: The Outlet is the Loras College literary magazine, published annually. Students may submit poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, and serve on the editorial staff. Alpha is an annual publication of writing across the curriculum sponsored by Delta Epsilon Sigma, the national Catholic Honors Society. Students may submit work to Alpha in the following genres: poetry, fiction, informal essay, and formal essay.
Experiential Learning:
- English Majors frequently complete internships with Dubuque-area publishing companies and in marketing or public relations offices.
- English majors frequent study abroad in the Ireland program. Other study abroad opportunities have included England, South Africa, etc.
- English majors may serve as Peer Writing Consultants for Loras College Writing Center.
