Pre Optometry at Loras
Students interested in optometry should take the list of courses shown as prerequisites for medical school as shown on that webpage. Students need a GPA of 3.3 or higher to be competitive applicants for optometry school upon graduation. Microbiology is a required course for this field.
Critical Factors for Admission:
- Shadowing several different optometrists in several commercial settings (private clinic vs commercial eyewear store like Pearl Vision or Lenscrafters) is advantageous. Many Loras grads have worked as a paid employee in each of these optometry settings to enhance their patient contact and their understanding of eye exams, health and patient-physician relationships.
- Students need to take the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) on one of several schedules dates each year. This test should be taken in the summer after your junior year or early Fall semester of one’s senior year.
