Pre Nursing at Loras
Loras does NOT have a nursing program. A student cannot graduate with a nursing degree from Loras. However, we are encouraging men and women to get a four year degree at Loras with a major of their choice and also to include science courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A minor in Biology would be advantageous as well. In their senior year at Loras, students can apply for entry into an Accelerated Bachelor’s or Masters degree program at several midwestern universities. These programs are typically 16 -24 months ending with a BS or MS in nursing. This degree allows the RN to then go in almost any direction in nursing in almost any part of the country in any hospital or clinical setting. Advanced training as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Anesthetist or surgical nurse can occur at this point too. Several Loras students have taken this route and are very happy with their current work situation.
Critical Factors for Admission:
- Shadowing several different nurses in several different hospital/clinical environments is very important.
- Three or 4 psychology courses will be useful too.
- A CNA certificate early in one’s college career will put the student in a hospital environment and give them insights and direct contact with nurses, patients and many other healthcare professionals.
- Students need to take the general GRE exam before they apply to an accelerated program.
