Pre Nuclear Medicine at Loras

Students interested in nuclear medicine should take the list of prerequisite courses shown on the Nuclear Medicine webpage link below.  Students need a GPA of 3.3 or higher to be competitive applicants for training as a nuclear medicine technologist upon graduation.  Students can take 3 or 4 years of courses at Loras and then apply to the Nuclear Medicine program at the University of Iowa.  This is a two year program there.  Nuclear Medicine Technologists work with physicians and other health care professionals in a hospital setting to diagnose and help treat different diseases.  This is done by injection of various radioactive chemicals that travel through the bloodstream to stick to or are attracted to specific sites where a tumor or abnormality may be causing disease symptoms.  Technologists have direct patient contact and are trained to use radioactive isotopes safely and effectively.

Critical Factors for Admission:

  • Shadowing several nuclear medicine technologists in Dubuque or at other hospitals will give the student needed insights about the daily activity in a radiology department.
  • More info on nuclear medicine at the University of Iowa can be seen at www.uiowa.edu.
