History of the Belmont House Intercultural Center The concept of establishing a cultural center on the Loras College campus began in the late 1960’s when African American students orchestrated a sit-in at Henion Manor to demand a Black Cultural Center at Loras College. The “Takeover of Henion Manor” resulted in May Place being established as a Black Cultural Center at Loras. During the Fall of 2000, The Loras Administrative Team approved a proposal for a Black Culture House to be located at 1470 Henion Street. The purpose of the Black Culture House was to provide a social and educational experience for African American students and the entire Loras community. In the spring of 2002, the Belmont House, located at 1381 Belmont Street, became the Intercultural Center at Loras College.
The Belmont House Intercultural Center strives to promote cultural understanding and inclusiveness by recognizing “the human dignity of each individual” in the Loras community in the context of its surrounding communities and the world. Challenging men and women to grow through programming and support services, the Belmont House Intercultural Center will encourage the Loras community to contribute to a diverse and changing society. OBJECTIVES Encourage the development of a climate in which all cultures are appreciated as valued members of the campus community; Increase diverse student enrollment at Loras College; Retain a greater number of diverse student population on the Loras College campus; Promote a positive image that all cultures contribute to Loras College.
