Loras College Counseling Center
Located in Suite 582, Campus Center
(563) 588-7650

Welcome to the Counseling Center web site. At the Center, our goal is to help you to learn skills to deal with the stress of college, to cope with troubling situations or to understand your feelings better. We cannot offer long term treatment, but we can help you find a suitable professional and work with you concerning how an on-going problem affects your life at Loras.

Common Student Concerns: College students are going through one of the most dramatic changes in their lives. It is normal that at times they feel puzzled or concerned about themselves or the situations in which they find themselves. Some of the ways that this comes out is that they may feel isolated or alienated, have trouble getting along with companions, feel depression or anxiety, or worry about how they eat, have difficulty with alcohol or other drugs, or have trouble changing relationships with family members. All of these problems can make it difficult to make the important decisions that face students.

How We Can Help
The Loras College Counseling Center offers a range of services, including crisis intervention, diagnostic assessment, therapy, and referral. We provide a safe place to discuss problems or situations that are hard to approach elsewhere.

Confidentiality
Services at the Loras College Counseling Center are regulated in the same manner as those with your private doctor. No one other than Counseling Center staff has access to client records without permission from the client. The records are not part of any other files at the college.
We take confidentiality very seriously. The only exceptions to this confidentiality policy are if a student is believed to be a clear danger to self or others staff must seek legal help to protect the student or others. If records are subpoenaed by a court they may have to be released, but the student will be consulted. Finally, in cases of abuse of a minor and some other situations involving abuse or neglect, and where there is a potential for on-going abuse, reporting is required by law. Even in those cases, the student would be informed if possible, and no more information than necessary would be released.

Eligibility, Number of Visits and Fees
All students, spouses and children, and all faculty, staff and employees, and their immediate families are eligible for services at the Counseling Center. In general services to staff are limited to helping identify a problem and appropriate services in the community. For students, the number of visits is determined individually, with the counseling staff focusing on brief therapy. Services at the counseling center are free to students and staff.
