 Honors In a Nutshell What are the Requirements? What do you have to do?
- Take 6 General Education courses in special Honors Program sections (MOI, Catholic Traditions, Democracy and Global Diversity, and three Advanced General Education courses; plus do the Honors section of the required Portfolio)
- Engage with the Dubuque community through the Service Learning capstone course (senior year)
- Do a special research project that can be connected to the research in your major if you wish
- Demonstrate a minimal competency in a foreign language
What are the advantages?
- The courses are challenging, experiential, and interdisciplinary
- The other students are active learners and serious about academics
- The level of conversation in class is very high
- You can get into Honors General Education courses much more easily than into regular Gen Ed courses
- The community of students and faculty is welcoming, inclusive, friendly, and vibrant
- There are opportunities for activities outside the classroom
- An Honors Degree can be a benefit when applying for graduate schools or for jobs
Does pursuing an Honors degree create problems for majors?
- It shouldn’t, since most of the Honors courses are courses you have to take anyway
- In fact, because you can always get into Honors courses it often makes scheduling easier
- The language expectations do not have to be met through course work
- The Honors research project should in most cases help you get a jump start on your research for your major
The honors program is built within the General Education Curriculum. Students must take 5 of 11 Gen Ed courses as Honors courses. There will also be a flexible research requirement that can be done over multiple semesters. You will embark on one service learning capstone course during your senior year.
