John C. Eby, Ph.D, Honors Program Director

Hello,

Thank you for showing interest in Loras College’s Honors Program.  I have been the director of the Honors Program for the past 3 years and every year it grows stronger. We have redesigned the focus and purpose of the program so that it is more coherent in its mission from the first class to the last, we now have regular community activities (yes, there is such a thing as a free lunch!), and we are constantly seeking more ideas and input from our students.  It has been an exciting and energetic year and I think we’re preparing an awesome opportunity for you to get connected quickly and meaningfully here at Loras.

Our goal in the Honors Program is to get you to think about your unique abilities, to help you think creatively about how to use them in positive and productive ways, and to introduce you to some big ideas other people have had upon which you can reflect as you construct a meaningful path for yourself.  If you like to think outside of the box in whatever field you study or whatever activities you do, if you enjoy learning for the sake of learning and growing intellectually, if you are curious about the things, people, and ideas you encounter, and if you want to make a difference in the world, I truly believe our Honors Program is a great place for you.

We have had our graduates go on to Medical School, Law School, Social Service, Business, Financial Management, graduate school programs in English and History, Teaching, Pharmaceutal and Veterinary practice, and many other careers.  We are very proud of the accomplishments of our graduates, but we are even more proud of the goals that many of them build into their career choices.  One of our recent graduates, for just a single example, is seeking to help evolve the corporate vision of a major investment company so that it will create and promote ethically driven portfolios for its customers.  That is just one great example of how we would like to see our graduates connecting their learning experience in the Loras College Honors Program to the broader world.

What you do and why you do it matters, and the core of our vision as a Program is to help you explore and develop your talents and reflect on how you, too, can “be the change.”

Again, thank you for giving us a look.  I would love to correspond with you or even meet you in person.  If you’d like to connect with a current Honors student here at Loras, I can set that up for you as well.

Sincerely,

John C. Eby
