Welcome to FOCUS
Fellowship of Catholic University Students
at Loras College!

FOCUS Staff:
Craig Sanger, Anne-Marie Cheely, Meg Ray, Jason Eilers

FOCUS Mission Statement:
To know Christ Jesus and to fulfill His Great Commission by first living and then communicating the fullness of life within the family of God, the Church.

FOCUS sponsors THE ROOT, Discipleship, Bible Studies, and Men's and Women's Nights.

Who we are:
Founded by Curtis Martin in 1997, FOCUS (Fellowship of Catholic University Students) reaches out to college students on campus across the United States to help develop their relationship with Jesus Christ and understand His Catholic Church. FOCUS campuses are lead by a team of (usually) four missionaries. We grow exponentially through a mentoring program called Discipleship. It is an opportunity to invest in students and teach them how to build up their peers in their relationship with Christ.

FOCUS National Conference 2010
December 30, 2009 – January 3, 2010 at the Marriott World Resort Center in Orlando, FL. The five-day event, held every two years, has drawn more than 3,000 attendees in the past and we are expecting attendance to increase this year.  FOCUS has created a conference Web site at www.focusconference.org.

Speakers and entertainers confirmed for the conference include Sean Dalton, Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR, Matthew Kelly, Matt Maher, Curtis Martin, Matthew West and others.  To see the full list of speakers, register or to learn more about the FOCUS National Conference 2010 details, please visit www.focusconference.org.  We would love to have you join us at conference!

THE ROOT
The first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 PM, THE ROOT is put on as an opportunity to hear dynamic guest speakers talk about our absolute need for Jesus Christ. It is much more than just a lecture in that we provide Live Music, Student Testimony, skits, video, food, give away prizes, and an opportunity to meet new people!

DISCIPLESHIP
Of 18-25 Year Old Catholics, only 15% go to Weekly Mass. This is a problem, and the late Pope John Paul II recognized this trend and has called the Church to a “New Evangelization!” FOCUS believes that the most effective way to spread the Gospel is through personal relationships and investment. FOCUS staff missionaries invite students into mentoring program where they encourage them to grow in prayer, sacramental life, virtue, and in living out their faith within the campus community. We train students to be leaders in their faith so they can take the faith out to their peers.

BIBLE STUDIES
This year we have a dozen weekly Bible Studies lead by missionaries and student disciples. Every week people meet to learn more about the Catholic Church and their role as a follower of Christ. They are offered at various times and locations throughout the week. Men study with men and women with women. Bible studies include topics such as Virtue, Christian Leadership, Salvation History, Evangelization, and the Gospels Luke to name of few. The goal is two-fold: 1) to know Jesus Christ better and to understand and love the Church, and 2) to establish and deepen Christian friendships. These groups help encourage: deeper discussions about one’s personal relationship with God, the study of the word of God (scripture), and support for one another as they try to live out their faith in Christ.

MEN'S and WOMEN'S NIGHT
Our society has a misconstrued vision what it means to be masculine and feminine. Twice a semester we have a chance to discuss how to become better Christian Men and Women. Food and fun activity following the talk!

Take the example of charcoal: when the coals are all together, they glow with heat for hours and hours. Pull one coal away from the pile, and it quickly cools off. Intramural sports teams, ski trips, BBQs, large group events, and conferences are all opportunities to deepen bonds of friendship and help keep the fire burning.
