Academic Internships
Academic internships engage students in and outside of the classroom. This form of experiential learning puts students into learning environments where ideas are tested and career-ready skills are developed. Through these experiences, students gain insights into the professional world, acquire invaluable on-the-job experience and learn more about themselves. Students discover hidden talents, sharpen their competencies and learn first-hand about the interpersonal complexities that abound in the workplace. Students face these interpersonal and intellectual challenges by applying classroom theories to practical problems. Internships allow students to investigate work roles, environments and career possibilities and, in some cases, provide a valuable service to the community.
Loras students talk about their internship experiences:
“My experience while in
Chicago has helped me to grow immensely, in ways I never thought. I feel very professionally prepared to enter the ‘real world’ after graduation. I experienced much personal growth as well, through immersing myself in an entirely new environment. My internship at the World Trade Center Chicago, gave me a new impression of Chicago as a rising international city and booming with international trade. I sharpened my networking and communication skills and have made many contacts for future career opportunities after graduation. I feel confident that my internship and involvement in the Chicago Center will make me more marketable to employers.” ---Katie Morrissey '08

“My internship with the
US
Olympic Committee was invaluable. It was always a dream of mine to work with the Olympic Movement. I not only learned a great deal about the Olympics and the duties associated with sports management, but also the importance of networking. The most beneficial part of my summer experience was the opportunities I had to sit down with professionals from a range of areas in the Olympic Committee and just have a conversation. At least once a week I was setting up informational interviews and meeting with national events directors, business development managers, and marketing directors. These meetings were an essential part of the success of my internship! After graduation I hope to return to
Colorado and pursue a career in events with the Olympic Team!”---Molly Tomlonovic '07,

Olympic Committee Internship Program, Summer 2006
A successful internship may lead to a successful career. The experience begins with students and their site supervisors defining learning goals that can be pursued through the experience. During the college semester, students work with site supervisors, faculty sponsors and CEL staff to observe and reflect on the learning embedded in their workplace experience. The internship culminates in students demonstrating their knowledge and showcasing their learning through a comprehensive portfolio.
Through a variety of local and national programs, students can pursue internships that encourage them to apply what they are learning through their coursework to professional settings. Internships are an excellent way to obtain experience in the field prior to college graduation.
